Playing Catchup
What I missed while I was on my unannounced blogging hiatus:
- Andrew Careaga went on a very short, announced blog sabbatical (first post sabbatical post: 22 hours later)
- Bill Hayes posted about Discovery's successful return to earth, Apollo 13, and the Columbia disaster. Of course, while Apollo 13 was on Bill's mind, it was before my time, but the twisted white claw cloud of Challenger explosion is firmly etched in my mind.
- AC, fresh off that extensive sabbatical, posted about the UN board game called "The Road to Peace", which is supposed to teach about peace and reconstruction. Great, spend money on a board game. Why not get them Bibles and teach them about real peace and reconciliation?
- AC, going for the trifecta (three-peat, hat trick, etc.) in this list, posted a Friday Five Frivolity about the worst bands ever. AC skewers Journey, which in spite of the fact that I haven't listened to in quite a while, is pretty good. Then in the comment free-for-all that ensued, AC tried to add ~11 years to my age. My contribution to the list (albeit late): Tiffany, Nirvana, Brittany Spears, Lisa Lisa with her Cult Jam, and Neil Diamond.
- Bill Hayes at some point switched his beach lounging picture for something more formal.
- Rob Williams links to the University of North Dakota's response to the NCAA's new policy of disallowing some Native American (I say some because the Aztecs and others got exemptions) mascots, logos, etc. at championships. Florida State University also protested and is fighting the policy. What's next, does Seminole, Florida; Seminole County, Florida; Osceola County, Florida; Muscogee County, Georgia; Cherokee County, Georgia; and numerous other towns and municipalities have to change their names?
That's not all I missed, but I know the rest is out there for you to find. It's time for sleep now.

Good "worst bands" list! Although Neil Diamond had some pretty good stuff early in his career ("Hot August Night," "Cracklin' Rosie"). I agree with you on Britney and Lisa Lisa. Nirvana isn't the worst of the worst, in my opinion, but they're also a touch overrated.
Thanks for playing along!

Thanks, AC, for the compliment, and the idea. Neal Diamond did some good stuff ("Coming to America" comes to mind), but I never liked his singing voice. As for Nirvana, any band for whom MTV (or was it VH1) runs a contest to figure out the words to their big hit song has to be bad.

The NCAA announced that Florida State University is no longer subject to the decision regarding Native American mascots and logos due to "the unique relationship between the university and the Seminole Tribe of Florida."
