Target: Weather.GOV
Slashdot reported (21 April 2005) that Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania has introduced Senate Bill 786, which would limit the data and analysis that the National Weather Service could offer to the general public.
I have written Senators Chambliss and Isakson (of my home state of Georgia) to urge them to vote against this bill.
The problem is that NWS has to collect and generate this data to do it's job of providing severe and hazardous weather warnings. Why should I not be able to access this data over the internet directly from the source? NWS provides the data free of advertisements, be they for travel, mortgages, or other services the private company offers.
Please contact your senators and urge them to vote NO on Senate Bill 786, the National Weather Service Duties Act of 2005.
